revenge is mine!

so part of the reason why i lost a huge number of files (in the end, let’s just say i lost everything) 2 weeks ago is because two of the 1.5tb drives i ordered were actually defective.  this will happen from time to time and i was pretty unlucky to get two bad drives but i can’t put much fault on newegg or seagate.  you have to assume the drives are bad, is what i’m saying.

anyway, yesterday i got two replacement drives in the mail.  i’ll mail back the bad drives tomorrow, because just now my second drive finished resyncing and i have 4 beautiful solid green lights on my NAS and 0 drive alerts and 3.9 terrabytes to get busy filling.

i think i’d fill these drives a whole lot faster if i had a just-announced nikon d300s.  but that might have to wait.

I just talked to Roy about your ReadyNAS debacle. I’m sorry about all of the data but I like Jen’s approach to the whole situation – the files are just things. Now you know what to do when drives fail in a NAS device and as GI Joe would say, “Knowing is half the battle.”

I have the baby brother of your NAS (The ReadyNAS Duo) and I am running in the precarious 1 disk space right now, no redundancy, no protection. Every now and then I get close to adding another drive but this is way more gangsta. Ride or die…NAS style.

I hope all has been well, Niv. I love the site address by the way. Niv, in fact, is.

hey skye, awesome to hear from you. thanks for the words, and you’re right – just things, and i’ve learned a lot. though, given that i’ve learned a lot, i’ll say this – it wouldn’t kill you to get a second drive and some redundancy :)

thanks for the props, and i hope things are going well back on the east coast.

I’m loving life back East right now and I’m really enjoying the new site. I kind of like that I’m getting to the show a bit late – I can go back and read through the past entries all at once. It’s like getting a full season DVD of a great show and watching it all in one weekend. And yeah, I think I should look into that spare drive for the NAS…
